Wind Report - FIND OUT before you Go!

How the Wind Report WindSMS & this website works

Find Out before you Go - for both your enjoyment and your safety.

Our Weather stations read the wind 24 hours-a-day 7 days-a-week. The wind data is sent to our server every 3 minutes. Our wind data is way more accurate than any forecast!

The reason we are more accurate is because of the many factors that affect wind flow around the Cape Peninsula 1) Cape Town has many micro climates caused by the mountains of the Cape Peninsula 2) Cape Towns position down South in the cold Benguela current sweeping past our coastline and 3) the dominant southerly winds that reach Cape Towns shores in summer.

How do you get the current Live! Wind Info for any of our stations?
SIMPLY SMS / TEXT a 2-letter code for the required station to 36010 at R5.

This is the SA Premium Rate SMS system. The Premium Rate WindSMS is priced from R5 to R15 and works for the actual 4x South African Networks - Vodacom, MTN, Telkom Mobile and CellC plus FNB.

You must BUY a SMS/text bundle to use Premium Rate WindSMS - if you recently renewed your contract you get Free SMS - NOTE these FreeSMS will NOT WORK.
You cannot use your CONTRACT Bundle FREE SMS to pull WindSMS - they will NOT work. Aparently the reason why NO bundle sms will work is due to ICASA rules to prevent children signing up for subscription sms services at eg, R5 a day. We do NOT offer any subscription services - every time you require Live! Wind info you have to send a request SMS/text.
www.WindReport.co.za gives you the wind data from each station. The wind & weather data is delayed by 2 hours BUT shows data going back 6 hours - to allow you to see how the wind is developing or dropping. Together with Windguru forecasts you can decide that it is increasing and send a WindSMS for the current wind info for a station of your choice or request info from all our stations using GUSTY WindSMS to 39055 at R15 for 4 hours access to ALL CT stations.

WHAT the Wind Report WindSMS shows (see below for example)
The Reply SMS you receive shows the following Wind & Weather info:
  • the Current Windspeeds recorded.
      - we give you the Average Windspeed.
      - we give you both the LOW and the GUST Windspeed. - this gives you the Total RANGE of the windspeeds
      - a small range shows consistent speeds
      - a large range is unsafe!
The Wind Report was the 1st to present this info.
  • the Current Averaged Wind Direction
  • the Past 15, 30 and 45 minutes Wind Readings recorded by the station.
      - this gives you an idea of how the wind is developing or dropping.
      - this also gives you an idea of how much the direction is swinging around.
  • We also give you the Current Temperature
      - Cold air is denser which makes the wind stronger
        - that is why cold dry air is much heavier than warm humid air.
        - the more water vapor in the air, the less dense the air becomes
    • plus the Current barometric pressure.
        - a Rising or Falling barometer shows changes in the weather with more or less wind.
How do you get the Live! Wind info?
You simply SMS a 2-letter code to a short number for our service. This uses Premium Rate SMS. Within a few minutes the server will sms you back with the wind info.

Windspeed is in knots (1 knot = 1.85 kph
(quick calculation - multiply knots x2 = kph)
    • Gust windspeeds are one factor to take into account for your safety.
    • We were the first to consider the lowest windspeed in the same period.
    • The difference between the High and Lo wind speed allows you to see how gusty it is. Normally the more consistent the wind is, the smoother the ride.
      • A big difference between Lo & Hi speed = very gusty and potentially dangerous.
      • A small difference between Lo & Hi = consistent smooth wind conditions.
    • Another factor to be aware of - How much is the wind direction swinging from side to side? Consistent direction makes sailing and surfing easier.
